Thesis:

Measurement of Function in Children with Cerebral Palsy. Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, 2000.

Current position: Research leader at the Research platform for Disability studies in Habilitation (collaboration between Habilitation & Assistive Technology Service, Region Skåne, Lund University, Malmö högskola),Senior lecturer at the program Master of Medical Science and Centre for Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Medicine.
Clinical speciality:

Pediatric Physiotherapy

Current
Research Field:

In collaboration with Region Skåne and Malmö University, the Faculty of Medicine, LU has established a four-year funded Research Platform for Disability Studies, aiming to strengthen multidisciplinary habilitation research with strong collaboration between theory and practice. The overall goal of the research is support situations in daily life and enhance quality of life for people with functional limitations.

In order to promote health and quality of life for people with functional limitations, in the whole lifespan perspective research that can support the transition into adulthood is important. Factors as  e.g. needs, motivation, attitudes, opportunities and  barriers for access to participate in activities in the society are important to study from the children’s, adolescents and young adults own perspective. Thus both qualitative and quantitative approaches (open approach and related to International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health). Health economic factors will also be of importance and studied. Strong emphases will be put on the implementation of the results.

Since 1993 my research has been focused on epidemiology, early detection, health promotion and the natural course in a long-term follow-up in children, adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and their families. Cerebral palsy has been related to child- and young adulthood but today there are more adults living with CP than children. Parents often need to continue being the caregivers when their child grows up and the contact with health care providers are radically reduced when the child leaves the child health care system.

In 1994 we started a health promotion program for children with CP in southernmost part of Sweden, CPUP (Follow-up program for CP). CPUP has dramatically improved the situation for children with CP e.g. a decrease of dislocation of the hip to zero and severe contractures with 70%. This research has a multi- and interdisciplinary approach and the Depts. of Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurosurgery at Lund University hospital and the organisation for Habilitation & Assistive technology service are collaborating. In 2005 it became a National Quality Register and now is whole Sweden, Norway, parts of Danmark and Island involved (www.cpup.se).  A similar health promotion program for young adults is missing but needed. A national multidisciplinary reference group in collaboration with RBU (Swedish Association for Children and Youth with Disabilities) are performing a pilot-project. Based on the outcomes web-based follow-up routines will be constructed. A source for multidisciplinary long-term follow up research, from early child- to adulthood will be a possibility. This research will enhance health promotion and quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and their families through the whole lifespan.

Other areas of my research are; measurement methodology research e.g. translations, culture adaptations, validity and reliability studies are parts of the research enhancing implementation of standardized outcome measurements for quality assurance and evidence based practice (EBP) in the field of pediatric habilitation.

Pedagogical current research

Together with my colleague, Senior lecturer Christina Gummesson I got the Lund University pedagogic award 2008 for developing online courses in Movement Science Theories and Practice for postgraduate students within the first multidisciplinary Master of Medical Science programme at Faculty of Medicine. The courses are research preparatory which is also strengthened by the pedagogical approach used; Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), where learning outcomes are the starting point from which the participants own needs can direct the learning and working process. All course activities are focusing on the participants information-processing-skills from observation and expressed question to the synthesis. The pedagogical approach is selected to enhance inter-professional and lifelong learning. Within this courses digital learning resources such as PodCasts, screen cast and self assessments are developed, that also can be useful for campus students as well as other teachers. The courses contribute to internationalization and have sustainable structures.

The same year we became members of the Teaching Academy at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund university. Pedagogical research are important and together our research are focused on learning- and study strategies and how students self confidence and autonomy can be scaffolded in a professional and evidence based life-long learning perspective. We also collaborate with Ariel University, Israel and Melbourne University, Australia.
